DRDO Hospital now offers free treatment to COVID Patients

• Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel COVID Hospital has opened its service to coronavirus patients for free.
• The hospital has a capacity of 100 ICU beds furnished with 250 ventilators.
• The 1000-bed medical facility was established, keeping the WHO guidelines in mind.

THD NewsDesk, New Delhi: Given the spurt in Covid cases yet again, New Delhi’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel COVID Hospital has opened its medical service to coronavirus patients for free. According to Delhi CM Kejriwal, Delhi will soon experience the third wave of the pandemic which could claim more lives. 

As of now, the DRDO-built hospital is treating 400 patients and still has more beds vacant beds to offer. Chairman, Dr G Satheesh Reddy boasted of the free treatment being provided to Covid patients at DRDO. He said, “People are not being charged for any services, including the food, here.”

The hospital is spread out over a vast area of 25,000 sq. m. of the Indian Air Force land. Moreover, the medical facility offers a 100-bed intensive care unit (ICU), furnished with 250 ventilators and a 150-bed high dependency unit. In addition to that, all 1,000 beds have an oxygen facility.

Noting the recent surge in Covid cases, Col. Nikahat Jahan, an anesthesiologist and intensivist said,

“Earlier, we were admitting 20/40 patients, but now for the last five days, we have been admitting double the number.”

“Strict protocols are being followed while dealing with the patients, maintaining each other’s safety. We are very strict about our infection prevention measures,” said Colonel Jahan.

Interestingly, the temporary hospital was built within 12 days by the civil works and estate Directorate of DRDO. The 1000-bed medical facility was established, keeping the WHO guidelines in mind. However, this hospital situated in Delhi Cantonment caters to only moderate to severe patients. So far, the hospital has treated 1900 Covid patients successfully with a recovery rate of 83%.
