THD NewsDesk, Goa: Panaji: Aspiring to set up a medical device park at Verna, the state cabinet appointed PricewaterhouseCoopers to draft a detailed project report (DPR). Hoping to qualify for the health tech project, Goa is competing with neighbouring states Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. Currently, the five Indian states are in a bid to attract Japanese manufacturers willing to invest $11 bn. in their bulk drugs and medical devices project.
Making headway, Goa’s industries department has approached the Centre to express its intention to set up a manufacturing cluster for medical devices in the state. Aiming to develop Goa into a pioneering healthcare hub, the state government has steadily made efforts to boost its production of healthcare equipment.
Elaborating on the plan of action, the cabinet note states,
“The objective is to identify the stakeholders in the state in order to help in the development of infrastructural facilities in the park so that the parks will provide common testing and laboratory facilities at one place while reducing manufacturing cost significantly and create a robust ecosystem for medical device manufacturing in the country”.
“It is envisaged that the medical device park will create huge employment opportunities in the state and provide opportunities to innovative entrepreneurs to set up their business,” it states.
This is a part of central government project ‘Promotion of medical park’ the appointed consultant will submit the DPR to the Centre. The Department of Pharmaceuticals, under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, has already notified the guidelines for the scheme. According to the guidelines, only four states would be chosen for the project in health care sector.
