THD NewsDesk, Rome: A recent study conducted by San Rafaelle Hospital in Milan has revealed that a large number of people recovering from COVID suffer from mental health issues like post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, insomnia, and depression. As reported on the 6th of August, the study arrived at this result after consulting 402 recovered patients after a month.
In the study, published in the journal Brain, Behaviour and Immunity-
- 55.7% of the patients self- reported at least one mental health issue
- 28% suffered from PTSD
- 31% from depression
- 42% from anxiety
- 20% from OCD
- 40% from insomnia.
“There are some biological changes in the brain after Covid, which in some ways is related to creating psychiatric manifestations,” said Dr. Soumitra Pathare, Director, Centre for Mental Health and Law and Policy ILS. According to Dr. Pathare, the main reasons for these manifestations are the psychological experiences like panic, anxiety and fear, and social experiences of COVID-19.
“Stigma, discrimination, fear of the future, fear of losing jobs, are some of the many reasons that can lead to psychological problems in patients post-Covid-19,” he added.
The pandemic of COVID-19 is taking a toll on the mental health of many, including both the infected and the non-infected due to several major contributing factors like-
- isolation
- restrictions on mobility and gatherings
- the stress of increased workload and unemployment
- adverse impact on eyesight and vision due to increased screen time
