The office was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, with senior government officials, diplomatic representatives and AstraZeneca representatives present, the report said.
The report calls the site a corporate office, while remarks it attributes to Mr Fadnavis and to an AstraZeneca director describe it as the company’s India commercial office. What the company said about its India business
According to Indian Pharma Post, AstraZeneca said it has launched more than 25 new medicines and indications in India over the past three years and is running about 80 global clinical trials in the country. It said it employs nearly 5,000 people across India and that its focus areas are oncology, biopharmaceuticals and rare diseases.
According to the report, the company said the office would bring it closer to healthcare stakeholders and support talent development and collaboration across its main therapy areas. It also said it plans to use artificial intelligence in prevention, awareness, diagnosis and treatment, and to work with governments and industry partners on access to therapies. No timelines or budgets for these plans were reported.
The report attributed remarks to Mr Fadnavis, who linked the company’s decision to Maharashtra’s pharmaceutical and life sciences base, its talent, its institutions and its healthcare infrastructure. Praveen Rao Akkinepally, Country President and Managing Director of AstraZeneca Pharma India, said India was at an important point in healthcare and cited the need for earlier diagnosis, new treatments and fairer access, according to the report. Arun Krishna, a non-executive director of the listed Indian company and AstraZeneca’s Area Vice President for Asia, said India was an increasingly important contributor to the group’s growth in Asia.

Our reading
- The Healthcare Daily’s reading: an office opened by a chief minister gives AstraZeneca a visible link with the Maharashtra government at its India commercial base. Because the company has not disclosed headcount or spending for the site, the size of the commitment cannot yet be judged.
- The figure of about 80 global trials in India is relevant to hospital research departments and site management organisations that compete for sponsor studies. The company did not break the trials down by phase, therapy area or site.
- On our calculation, oncology made up about 68 per cent of the Indian unit’s first-quarter revenue (Rs 4,649 million of Rs 6,828 million). Hospital oncology buyers and distributors are the customers most exposed to the company’s commercial plans in India, while rare diseases remain a small line.
