What you need to know

  • Cotecna announced on 16 October 2026 that it has acquired Energon Labs, an analytical testing laboratory in Hyderabad.
  • Cotecna says Energon is cGMP-compliant, US FDA-inspected and ISO 17025 certified, and serves drug, device and packaging clients in India, the US, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East.
  • The price, the stake acquired and any completion conditions were not disclosed.

Cotecna, a testing, inspection and certification group founded in Switzerland, said on 16 October 2026 that it has acquired Energon Labs, an analytical testing laboratory in Hyderabad that works for pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, medical device and packaging companies. The announcement was datelined Geneva and Hyderabad.

Cotecna did not disclose the price, the share of Energon it bought, Energon’s revenue or headcount, or whether the transaction has completed or still needs approvals. The release says only that Cotecna “today announced the acquisition”.

What Cotecna is buying

According to Cotecna, Energon is a cGMP-compliant laboratory that has been inspected by the US FDA and holds ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 17025:2017 certification. The release does not give the date or outcome of the FDA inspection. The services it lists include analytical method development and validation, stability studies, impurity profiling, extractables and leachables testing, peptide and oligonucleotide characterisation, packaging compatibility testing and regulatory support. Cotecna says the laboratory serves clients in India, the United States, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East.

The release says Energon complements Cotecna’s pharmaceutical testing network, which includes Cotecna Life Sciences, Shiva Analyticals and Neotron Pharma; it does not say how or when those businesses joined the group. Cotecna was founded in Switzerland in 1974 and has operations in more than 55 countries, according to the version of the release distributed in India through a syndicated press feed. Energon’s founder, Manikanth Reddy, said: “Joining the Cotecna Group opens an exciting new chapter for Energon Labs.”

Together, we are creating a stronger platform to support the evolving needs of the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors.

Amit Chopra, CEO South Asia and Middle East, Cotecna Group

Sébastien Dannaud, chief executive of Cotecna Group, said the deal supports the group’s ambition to become one of the largest providers of life sciences testing services in India and strengthens its position in what he called one of the world’s most important pharmaceutical markets. Chopra said the acquisition fits Cotecna’s strategy of building a pharmaceutical testing ecosystem across key growth markets.

What the buyer did not say

The announcement does not set out any plans for Energon’s capacity, investment in new equipment, staffing or pricing, and it does not say whether Energon will keep its name. It also gives no figures for the size of Cotecna’s existing Indian laboratory network, so the scale of the addition cannot be judged from the release.

Our reading

  • The Healthcare Daily’s reading: Cotecna presents the deal as a step towards becoming one of the largest life sciences testing providers in India, and Energon is the fourth name in the pharmaceutical testing network the release lists. For Indian manufacturers that outsource quality testing, consolidation of independent labs under international groups can change how contracts, prices and turnaround times are negotiated, although Cotecna has said nothing about pricing.
  • An FDA inspection history and ISO 17025 accreditation are the credentials export-focused clients look for, because overseas regulators and buyers rely on the test data. Cotecna gives no inspection date or result, so the release alone does not establish the laboratory’s current inspection status.
  • Energon serves clients in the Middle East, according to Cotecna, and the deal was announced by Cotecna’s chief executive for South Asia and the Middle East. For Gulf manufacturers and importers that use Indian laboratories, a change of ownership can bring new contract terms; neither company has said whether existing agreements will change.
  • With no price disclosed, the deal gives investors no benchmark for valuing Indian contract testing laboratories.
