THDNewsDesk, New Delhi: On Thursday, Harsh Vardhan, Union Health Minister stressed upon the necessity to shift from food security to nutrition security to accomplish the objectives of the Eat Right India Movement. He asked other concerned ministries to create a common platform to regulate general purposes, strategies and unify their actions.
Dr Harsh Vardhan managed an inter-ministerial conference with FSSAI and senior officials of several ministries to establish a ‘whole of government’ path to accomplish ‘Vision 2050’ of the Eat Right India Movement.
As per an official statement, he observed that the economic cost of food-borne diseases in India is about to reach a large amount of USD 15 billion. The line ministries will join hands to establish a universal platform to focus towards the same objectives and strategise their actions for nutrition security rather food security.
He stated, “The different ministries can make critical interventions in primary production, food processing, their regulation concerning wastage and issues of hygiene and end-consumption. Only then will ‘Eat Right India’ become a movement in its true sense.”
He further added, “A systems-based approach can ensure food safety along with their secure availability, promoting a healthy diet along with taking care of the environment through sustainable practices.” The other line ministries involve the Women and Child Development Ministry, the Agriculture Ministry and the Ministries of Food, Fisheries.
Dr Harsh Vardhan also stated in another meeting that India is on the verge to possess a COVID-19 vaccine in a few months. The country will be in the process of distributing it to people in the next six months. He gave these observations at the Annual General Meeting of Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) and St. John’s Ambulance.
He said, “We are very much into the vaccine development process…in the next few months at the most we should have a vaccine and, in the next six months we should be in the process of delivering the vaccine to the people of India.”
Vardhan also stated to battle against COVID-19 by keeping a distance of six feet, along with frequent washing of hands and using masks and face shields, especially in public places. These steps mark as a social vaccine for the people.
