India to kickstart world’s largest Covid-19 vaccination drive

On January 16, the world's largest Covid immunisation drive would commence by vaccinating 300, 000 healthcare workers

THD NewsDesk, New Delhi: On January 16, 2021, India will witness the commencement of its first-ever Covid-19 immunisation drive. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will kickstart the world’s largest coronavirus immunisation drive. The preparations of the vaccination drive have already begun with the shipping of 16.5 million doses across India and 3,006 vaccination sites have been set up. The nationwide immunisation drive would begin with the Prime Minister’s address.

300,000 healthcare workers of India recorded as the initial vaccine beneficiaries have already been notified today with the allotted site and time.

Accordingly, the average number of inoculations for each site has been capped at 100 for the first day. Eventually, the number would be increased. 

Vaccination drive in Delhi

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal would personally supervise the inoculation drive at Lok Nayak Hospital. Currently, 240,000 health care workers have been registered for the vaccination as the priority population, who would also be eligible for their second dose.

On the first day, around 8,100 frontline medical workers will be administered the vaccine and 274,500 doses of Covishield (Serum Institute of India) vaccine and 20,000 doses of Covaxin (Bharat Biotech) has already been received. Out of the total Covishield vaccines, 10% would be reserved for exigencies such as breakage.

The total number of vaccination centres in Delhi are 8 – out of which 75 will be for the Covishield vaccine, while six will be for Covaxin. The vaccination sites have been distributed among different zones in the following manner: 

Further, it has been reported that the vaccines had already arrived at the district storage units from the Rajiv Gandhi Superspeciality Hospital, Tahirpur on January 14, 2021.
