IRDAI constitutes special committee to make health insurance more affordable in India

Amidst the increasing demand of health insurance policies during the pandemic, the IRDAI strives to safeguard the interests of policyholders

THD NewsDesk, New Delhi: On January 13, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India instituted a panel of experts to assess India’s health insurance products. Taking note of the needs of Indian citizens, the regulatory body aims to propose the most suitable insurance products and processes. 

IRDAI observed the growing trend of taking health insurance policies among Indian citizens amidst the global pandemic and intends to assist the public in making choices according to their needs. As the health insurance market is expanding, the quantity of innovative products and services it offers also increases.

Functions of the committee

This panel’s primary responsibility is to conduct meetings and, afterward, submit their separate recommendations on the issues that come up regularly. Moreover, the committee is in charge of analyzing various health insurance policies’ terms and conditions to safeguard the general public’s interest in availing such schemes. The recommendations would be to make health insurance schemes affordable by keeping a check on the rate structure and treatment protocol.

Further, the IRDAI also said that the body strives to ensure the steady growth of the health insurance industry while enhancing the health insurance system’s efficiencies. The committee will also work towards devising new approaches to the coverage of specific diseases or fields of practice, such as cardiology.
