About the hospital
Addenbrooke’s Hospital is on Hills Road in Cambridge and is run by Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH), together with The Rosie, a women’s hospital on the same site. According to CUH, John Addenbrooke left money to start a hospital in Cambridge in 1719, Addenbrooke’s opened in 1766 with 20 beds, and the Queen opened the first part of the new Addenbrooke’s Hospital in 1962. CUH says the Cambridge Biomedical Campus has developed around the hospital.
CUH’s statement of purpose describes Addenbrooke’s as providing emergency, surgical and medical care for local people and as the Major Trauma Centre for the East of England, with specialist services in transplantation, cancer, neurosciences, paediatrics and genetics. The same document says Addenbrooke’s and The Rosie have more than 37 operating theatres. The CUH website, read in October 2026, describes plans for Cambridge Children’s Hospital and Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital.
