About the hospital

Manchester Royal Infirmary is on Oxford Road in Manchester and is part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), which was formed on 1 October 2017 and runs ten hospitals across seven sites. The hospital’s website says it has 770 beds, treats around 750,000 patients a year and sees about 160,000 Emergency Department attendances a year. It works with the University of Manchester’s Medical School as a research and teaching hospital.

The hospital hosts a Major Trauma Centre and, according to its website, is a regional and national centre for kidney and pancreas transplants, haematology, vascular surgery, liver and pancreas surgery, rheumatology and HIV care. It was founded in 1752 with 12 beds in a converted house in Garden Street and moved to Oxford Road in 1909. The current building replaced the former infirmary, now Cobbett House and the trust’s headquarters, in 2009.
