THD NewsDesk, New Delhi: On October 5, Army chief General MM Naravane and Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla paid a Myanmar visit. They greeted Myanmar’s state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, with 3,000 vials of Covid-19 drug, Remdesivir, to facilitate its battle against the pandemic.
The generous gesture is a part of India’s efforts to foster friendly relationships with its neighbour Myanmar. Foreign Secretary Shringla and General Naravane had made the two-day visit with a vision to expand India-Myanmar ties on October 4.
On Monday, India’s ambassador to Myanmar, Saurabh Kumar, joined them to deliberate upon crucial bilateral issues, including connectivity, defence, and security.
Indian Embassy tweeted,
“As part of India’s contribution to help a friendly neighbour Myanmar fight against Covid-19, General Naravane and Shringla handed over 3,000 vials of Remdesivir to Suu Kyi.”
The two-day visit proved to be a success in strengthening international ties in the backdrop of souring Indo-China relations. This move is one of the many efforts made by the two countries to collaborate on mutual defence and security cooperation. India and Myanmar have banded together to bolster maritime security as well. India’s development cooperation in Myanmar is estimated at $1.4 billion.
The meet also marked General Naravane’s first visit to any foreign country as India’s Chief of Army Staff.
