- Tushar Mehta has informed SC bench that Ayush docs can prescribe medicines for preventing Covid.
- The Ayush ministry has clarified that the non-allopathic doctors can not claim their medicines cure Covid.
- Homoeopathic meds can be prescribed as an add-on treatment.
THD NewsDesk, New Delhi: On December 1, the Union government, represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Supreme Court that Ayush practitioners could prescribe preventive drugs for Covid patients. Mehta said that non-allopathic doctors such as Ayurveda, Unani and homoeopathy doctors may prescribe medication for prevention of Coronavirus as an additional treatment. To boost people’s immunity, Ayush doctors may advise non-allopathic medicines. However, the norms do not allow them to make claims that their remedies can cure the virus.
Addressing the Supreme Court bench presided by Justices Ashok Bhushan, RS Reddy and MR Shah, Tushar Mehta said,
“While approving the medicines, the Ayush ministry had clarified that it could not be claimed that these medicines can cure Covid-19,” Mehta said.
Earlier, the Ayush ministry had contended that as per the guidelines, homoeopathic practitioners are authorized to prescribe additional medications for treating the symptomatic Covid patients. However, the medication can not replace the conventional allopathic treatment of Covid positive patients.
Responding to the Solicitor General’s statement, the bench has asserted that Ayush practitioner ought to follow the norms at all times. Further, the homoeopathic medical professionals are not permitted to advertise their prescribed medication as a cure for the fatal illness.
