THD NewsDesk, Chennai: On October 15, Dr J A Jayalal was nominated as the national president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA). Taking charge of affairs from current president Dr Rajan Sharma, Dr Jayalal will assume the post on December 27.
Currently serving as the Dr Jayalal State Hon. General Secretary for IMA, Tamil Nadu and the National Coordinator for the Academic Wings of IMA, he will now preside over IMA as the National President of IMA. The IMA is the largest professional body of doctors in India with nearly four lakh doctors as its members.
Expressing the challenges ahead for doctors amidst the new education policy and the National Medical Commission,
Professing his belief in the prestigious IMA, Jayalal affirmatively said that the association IMA would leave no stone unturned in maintaining the sanctity of modern medicine. With the introduction of the recent National Education Policy, IMA is confronted with the challenge of the science stream being jumbled with other traditional streams. Moreover, the IMA is pushing forward the proposal for the Central Healthcare Professionals Protection Act amidst frequent incidents of violence against doctors.
“We have lost 610 doctors to Covid-19 across the country and 67 doctors in the state. It is our legitimate demand to the government to recognize them as martyrs of Covid-19,” Dr. Jayalal asserted in a press release.
Among other positions of responsibility bestowed upon him, Dr Jayalal has been serving in the Health and Family Welfare Department as the Medical Officer since 1993. At present, the doctor is also teaching as the Associate Professor in Surgery at Tirunelveli Medical College, Kanyakumari.
