THDNewsDesk: On Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed to assist India and other BRICS nations in advancing vaccines against the coronavirus. He also asked for operating a symposium by the five-member bloc on conventional medicine to explore its role in the COVID-19 prevention and remedy.
Xi stated while discussing the 12th BRICS summit through a video call, “As we speak, the Chinese companies are working with their Russian and Brazilian partners on phase three clinical trials for vaccines. We are prepared to have cooperation with South Africa and India as well.”
The virtual conference, conducted by Russian President Vladimir Putin, was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Xi stated, “China has joined the COVAX facility and will actively consider providing vaccines to BRICS countries where there is a need.”
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared nine candidate vaccines, which include two from China. They are currently being assessed for inclusion in the COVAX Facility. The COVAX is co-led by Gavi, an international vaccine alliance, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), and the (WHO). Its objective is to stimulate the growth and production of vaccines.
The coronavirus has affected more than 54 million people globally and destroyed more than 1.3 million people even as governments executed strict lockdowns and restraints to reduce the expanse of the virus that rose in the Chinese city of Wuhan.
Xi stated, “To support the development of BRICS Vaccine R&D center, China has designated its own national center. I propose we convene a BRICS symposium on traditional medicine to explore its role in coronavirus prevention and treatment.”
He also asserted that China would open the BRICS cooperation on a new industrial revolution innovation center in Xiamen’s Chinese city. He stated, “We welcome the active participation of fellow BRICS countries.”
Xi stated the BRICS countries need to “overcome divisions with unity and pool the maximum global synergy to beat the virus.”
In his speech, Xi concentrated on the demand for the BRICS countries to promote multilateralism, which allowed headwinds from rising nationalism in the US and other advanced countries, and developed five-member bloc recommendations.
He stated, “History teaches us that multilateralism, equity, and justice can keep war and conflict at bay. While unilateralism and power, politics will inflate dispute and confrontation. We BRICS countries must hold high the banner of multilateralism. We must endeavor to safeguard the UN centered internationals system and international order underpinned by international law.”
He stated, “It is impossible to reverse the trends of world multi-polarity and economic globalization.”
He stated, “The practice of using the pandemic to pursue de-globalization will end up hurting one’s own interests.”
The BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) is a substantial bloc that serves over 3.6 billion people or half of the world’s population. The BRICS countries have a combined GDP of USD 16.6 trillion.
