THD NewsDesk, New Delhi: As per a Scottish research, the Pfizer and Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccines are responding effectively against the severe Covid-19 infections. The researchers have reported this update on an ongoing Public Health England (PHE) data on Monday. “Healthcare workers were given the first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech shot” said a British Health Official on Monday. “Those findings suggested that both Pfizer and Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines are significantly reducing cases of COVID-19 with a drop of around 70% cases of infections”, said the research.
Meanwhile, Public Health England (PHE) announced that the Pfizer vaccine provides high levels of protection against infection and symptomatic disease from single dose and reduction of hospitalization and deaths due to Covid-19. It further states “Covid-19 will be reduced by more 75% in elderly people who have had a first dose.”
Further, PHE’s strategic response director Susan Hopkins said to the media, “Overall, we see a really strong effect to reducing any infection, asymptomatic and symptomatic”
Meanwhile, Mary Ramsay, PHE’s Head of immunization is encouraged by these initial findings and describes the data as strong evidence to show how Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is providing protection against the virus thereby reducing hospitalization and death.
This PHE’s findings comes from two different studies and analyses-
- Ongoing study among the health workers
- Assessment of testing data among people under or over 80
PHE said, “Among elderly groups, one dose of the Pfizer shot is 57% effective against symptomatic Covid-19 disease, and the second dose improves protection by more than 85%. Therefore, hospitalization and death among the older groups are seen to have the fastest decline since the peak in mid-January”
It further adds “The vaccination is also providing protection against the so called British variant SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, markedly reducing the risk of death and hospitalization for Covid-19”.
